When you’re looking through listings of local dentists, it can be difficult to figure out which one might be right for you. But finding a dentist isn’t hard if you know exactly what your priorities are. Here are some things you should be looking for in a new general dentistry office:

Not all practices include a walk in dentist or emergency dentist (meaning someone you can reach 24/7) on staff, but should expect to get an appointment relatively promptly for any of your dental concerns. Most offices keep a certain amount of time open for urgent concerns, so that cleanings don’t overtake the schedule.
- Affordable Dentistry
It’s difficult to know exactly how much a dental procedure will cost because your insurance will determine what is covered. So the best way to find an affordable dentist is to pick a preferred provider from your insurance program and go from there. You should always feel comfortable asking a dentist in advance what something will cost (sharing your insurance information, of course) and should never feel pressured into a procedure without knowing if you can afford it.
- Friendly Dentistry
As much as we joke about a dentist asking you questions during your cleaning — when you can’t answer — it’s important that you develop a rapport with your dentist and hygienist (the person who will perform most of your cleanings). Popular imagination aside, there’s no reason to be frightened of dentistry, and yet many people still experience anxiety leading up to and during a dental visit, even if it’s just a simple cleaning. While severe anxiety may merit searching specifically for a dentist who offers a range of sedation options, all most patients need to calm down is a friendly relationship with the people performing the procedures.
